The University of Wrocław has served as an important centre of learning, practicing, and teaching archaeology for more than two centuries. This volume offers a comprehensive insight into the last eighty years of its archaeological endeavors—from the turbulent early postwar period, when the faculty undertook the urgent task of recovering and reorganizing the dispersed museum collections, to the present day, marked by cutting-edge, often interdisciplinary research informed by the latest developments in natural sciences.

Renowned specialists in the field guide the reader through the key research and thematic areas explored by the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Wrocław: from the Stone Age, through the Metal Ages, including the Roman and migration periods, the Middle Ages, to the Early Modern era. Several chapters are devoted to the latest methodological and technological developments adopted by the Institute, as well as past and ongoing research projects. Others offer a glimpse into the inner workings of the Department of Archaeometry and Conservation of Archaeological Artefacts, the exhilarating discoveries of the Institute’s overseas team, and the intricate world of numismatics. The contributors—current or former staff of the Institute—share a common perspective: that, regardless of their particular research interests, the human being remains at the heart of archeological inquiry.

The archaeological community in Wrocław honours the legacy of their predecessors while actively engaging with the demands and oppurtunities of contemporary scholarship. The Institute continues to lead academic advancement, fostering international, interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaborations that not only strenghten the academic community as a whole, but also help chart inspiring directions for future research.
